Osterhout Design Group (ODG) is a private company headquartered in San Francisco. Their story begins in 1999, revolutionizing the high-tech toy industry by integrating high-performance electronics to create devices loved by the old and young alike. Today, ODG is changing the world of computing with its Augmented Reality Smart Glasses.

ODG has had long and successful history with heads-up displays and wearable computing. Working closely with government and corporate partners, they've developed and delivered multicore, cellular based handheld biometric computers; wearable, highly portable servers; miniature UAVs; and multiple versions of their Smart Glasses. As the company experienced rapid expansion during 2013 and 2014, the pains from having disparate systems and spreadsheets supporting business processes became visibly apparent:

  • Information silos impeded good business decisions
  • Reporting was not reliable and timely
  • Errors rework/interactions/interventions to keep transactions moving through various systems
  • The Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system was standalone and the process to integrate product development to production was not integrated, resulting in errors and rework.

Implementation

As a high tech manufacturing company utilizing the most advanced manufacturing techniques and devices, the need to have an ERP system not only address the above mentioned issues, but also support the company's end-to-end processes became important to future competitiveness. SAP® Business ByDesign® was deployed to support finance, supply chain management, production, after sales service and support, project management for government and commercial enterprise contracting, HR and CRM.

ERP Logic was selected as the implementation partner because it was in the best position to deliver the complete solution to ODG: SAP® Business ByDesign®, Reporting for Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) and ERP Logic had an adaptor to integrate ERP to the cloud-based Arena solution for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM).

The Results

ODG operates on one unified cloud platform with validated end-to-end processes and automated collaboration. This has increased the transparency of associated information and efficiencies within the company.

Sales forecasting now feeds into MRP planning, which allows ODG to optimize purchasing and production execution.

On the project side SAP® is now used to capture the entries needed to comply with DCAA as well as ODG's project management requirements.

The integration of the PLM solution with ERP eliminates errors and rework as well as accelerates time to market for new products and enhancements to current products.

Cross company reporting is now available faster; is more reliable; and is rich with drill-down capability and details to facilitate management monitoring.
